雨がしとしとと降る中、Vik(ヴィーク)というエリアにあるBlack Sand Beach(ブラック サンド ビーチ)へ。

During my stay in Copenhagen, two of my friends from Japan visited me for two weeks during their summer vacation. Spending the whole term in Copenhagen would be great, but using this unique opportunity to travel somewhere seemed even better. So we decided to go to Iceland; a place which was in the back of my head from before.
Unlike when traveling to a city, being accompanied by friends would make the travel a lot smoother when traveling in nature. So I contacted my friends in Japan before heading off, not expecting that they would actually come. To my surprise, they were able to join me. Considering how often we can go on a vacation every year is very limited, there is nothing more delightful then being able to share that opportunity with your best friends.

Iceland seems to be at the far end of the world from Japan. However, you can get there within 14 hours at the shortest, by taking an airplane and transferring at Finland or Copenhagen.

Besides during winter, visitors can enjoy traveling in the nature of Iceland by renting a camping car. Although it is a bit expensive, there are also hotels with glass ceilings where guests can enjoy the scenery all day. We chose to stay in an Airbnb where we can both stay and comfortable and enjoy the scenery. Airbnb is a good choice of accommodation for experienced travelers, since you can rent an entire house in a much lower cost than staying at a hotel.

We stayed in three different Airbnb locations, and spent five nights and six days in total. Traveling from one place to another took about two hours.

In the recent years, Iceland has constantly ranked as one of the top countries on the “World Happiness Report”. It has also ranked first place for seven consecutive years on the “Gender Gap Index”, which indicates the degree of gender inequality. The first female president was elected in Iceland in 1980, and today, female politicians occupy nearly half of the 62 seats in the national congress. The country has almost an equal rate of political and social participation rate between both genders; it aims to completely eradicate any inequality by 2022.

Not to mention, looking back in history, there were times far from a gender equal society. Many reforms were achieved through a long period of time by active and steady commitment by women themselves. In 1975, Icelandic women held the first strike to reject all housework and labor, called “Women’s Day off.” The strike made people realize how women play a crucial role in society, leaving a strong impact, such as Vigdís Finnbogadóttir – the country’s first female president – being elected five years later. Even now, the strike is being held periodically. Moreover, Iceland is also known to be very tolerant towards the LGBTQIA community. For example, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir – Iceland’s prime minister from 2009 to 2013 – is famous as being the world’s first prime minister to be married to a same-sex partner.

As mentioned, Iceland is a progressive country which accepts diversity. Having such a reputable social structure, the high cost of living is ever more noticeable. Soon after arriving in Reykjavik, we went in a noodle restaurant to grab a light meal; it costed around 2,000 yen. It is easy to compare with the price in Japan, since the currency unit is very similar. For dinner, we went to a casual tapas restaurant. Although the food was delicious, a bottle of wine which would be sold for around 800 yen at a convenience store in Japan, was priced around 8,000 yen. As I had heard in rumors, the price of alcohol is set quite high. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality of each dish.

Since we heard that seafood is a must-eat in Iceland, I tried octopus, shrimp, fish, and other seafood during my journey. All of them were fresh and meaty, and matched well with the Spanish seasoning. The taste and look was perfect. Although there were plenty of restaurants in Reykjavik, as soon as we stepped into the nature, there were barely any of them to choose from. So we decided to buy ingredients at a supermarket and enjoy cooking for ourselves.

The fish sold at the supermarket were all frozen and we couldn’t find anything fresh, so we decided to have lamb instead. There are more than twice as many sheep than the human population in Iceland. We saw sheep everywhere, all over the place when we were driving. One of my friends was trying to learn the crying sound of a sheep throughout the journey; in the end, she started to insist that she could actually communicate with them.

Sheep grow up in a rich and vast meadow in Iceland, fed by plenty of nutritious herbs such as thyme. As a result, the meat didn’t have a bad smell; it tasted better than the ones in Japan. So we were far from being tried of eating lamb every day; we couldn’t help but eat them.

Given that alcohol is not sold at supermarkets or convenience stores in Iceland, and the ones sold at liquor shops were expensive, it was a correct that we brought the many bottles of natural wine we bought back at Copenhagen. Although it is possible to purchase alcohol at a duty free shop in the airport, I recommend you bring them with you, if you are particular about their taste and type. We also bought two SIM cards at the airport, worried that connection will be weak in the nature. If you are traveling by car, having four people: one driver, someone who checks the car navigation, someone who searches and decides where to go, and a good talker who cheers the crew, seems like the best balance.

It was early September when we traveled, still a little early for aurora observation, and it was raining almost every day. Umbrellas are useless when traveling in to the wilderness, so you either need to bring a raincoat, or clothes you are fine with getting wet in. You must also bring and warm outfit, in case the temperature suddenly gets cold.

In the light rain, we visited Black Sand Beach, located in a village called Vik.
It was a black and sandy beach as its name suggests; it felt as if we were in a monotone world.

Such a grand landscape even changes rainy or cloudy weather in to a beautiful scenery.
Behind us towered a gigantic boulder which looked as if it was artificially designed. What made it look like this? No human work can surpass this grand work of nature.
You can easily tell that music created by Icelandic musicians such as Björk and Sigur Rós incorporates much of this mystic and magnificent (but somewhat delicate) landscape of Iceland.

Iceland is famous for having natural hot springs all across the country. Among all, a hot spring resort called “Blue Lagoon” in Reykjavik is well-known worldwide. However, since I was recommended from an Icelandic friend to go to a hot spring in the nature, we decided to go to a hot spring called “Reykjadalur,” out of the several possible destinations.

Only after parking the car, we realized that we needed to walk more than an hour in the rain to get to the hot spring. We raised our spirits and walked fast to avoid the cold weather as possible.

On the way, we saw an amazingly beautiful scenery despite the rain.
Soaked in the cold rain, we finally arrived to the natural hot spring. It felt all the more rewarding, given that we struggled to get there. The water temperature differed from place to place, so I tried to find the spot which best suits for me. Be aware, because some places are extremely hot. Of course, there are no rooms for undressing since it is in the middle of nature.

For your reference, this is the link to the website which lists most of the country’s natural hot springs.
As we traveled around, we discovered a tendency that the more difficult it is to get to the place, the more wonderful the scenery is. Based on this idea, we decided to travel up to Fjadrargljufur Canyon which was regarded as one of the most beautiful valleys in the world.

On the way, we found an area which was entirely covered with moss. With much excitement, we stopped the car and walked around. The moss was very thick and was spreading as far as we can see. For some, it may be a little disgusting, but you can tell its delicacy with a careful look. It had a unique beauty completed after thousands; something only nature can create.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon was about an hour drive from Vik, and 4 hours from Reykjavik. We were required to walk for a while after parking the car (again!), but it was indeed a grand and beautiful valley, well worth visiting.

If it is raining, the temperature feels very low even in September, taking away a lot of energy. However, we were able to make it a comfortable trip, by searching about the places we were planning to go beforehand, and avoiding to make the schedule too tight. The biggest event of each day was enjoying the dinner we cooked together back at the accommodation.

We had only one sunny day during our 5 nights 6 days trip; a usual thing in the unique climate of Northern Europe. But this made us feel incredibly happy during the rare days when it is sunny. The bad weather seems worth it, if you consider that it allows you to experience feeling so thankful to the sunny weather. I would like to come back to Iceland in winter next time to experience the world of ice and snow.

Nature can be extremely harsh, and without having a proper attitude, traveling will accompany danger. Still, as long as we show respect and sincerity, it can give us a wonderful experience. That was what the grand nature of Iceland taught me.
